SARAH PONNIUK
Elder

She is Wise. Hailing from Moncton, New Brunswick in Atlantic Canada, and originally from Goose Bay, Labrador, Sarah is a beautiful, gentle, soft spoken traditional Elder. She is everything that you would expect an Elder to be. Sweet, kind, gentle, wise and genuine. Her stories of her people are inspiring as she uses her wisdom and life experience to teach others how it is possible to overcome many hardships through connecting to one’s self. Her greatest gift is her ability to listen intently. She often tells us that you have two ears and one mouth for a reason. She believes it to be very important that you set your boundaries and take care of yourself before you can help others. Sarah dedicates much of her time and works tirelessly working with Indigenous men in institutions who are trying to find a better path in their lives. She believes in the power of forgiveness and that people can change for the better if they are supported and encouraged. Sarah is filled with a heart that overflows for her people and all that are and have become a part of her family. Her laugh is absolutely delightful and although she feels deeply, there is always room for a good belly aching laugh. She is full of life, spirit, and determination to make a positive impact in community. She is the person who always stands up for the underdog and testament that good things can happen through strong leadership. Sarah is one of six traditional Elders serving on the Elders Advisory Committee of the Empowering Indigenous Women for Stronger Communities project. Her guidance and support have brought much comfort and healing to our Peer Facilitators and communities. She is always there to listen if someone needs to talk. She is comforting, non judgemental and encouraging. Her words of advice and wisdom are often just what is needed to give you the strength to follow your heart. We are so honored to have Sarah supporting us on our journey.
